Frequently Asked Questions
Q - How do I look after my cyanotype?
Thank you for purchasing a handmade cyanotype from Blue Vintage! Cyanotypes are delicate, light-sensitive prints, and with the right care, they can last for many, many years. Follow these simple care instructions to preserve the beauty and vibrancy of your original cyanotype print:
- Keep Away from Direct Sunlight
Cyanotypes can fade with prolonged exposure to UV light. Display your print in a shaded area or use UV-protective glass when framing.
- Frame with UV-Protective Glass
Framing under UV-filtering glass or acrylic helps protect your cyanotype from fading and environmental damage.
- Avoid Excess Moisture
High humidity can affect the paper and chemistry of cyanotypes. Keep them in a dry environment and avoid hanging them in bathrooms or kitchens.
- Handle with Clean, Dry Hands
Oils and dirt from your hands can affect the print. Always handle your cyanotype with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves.
- Store Properly When Not Displayed
If storing your print, keep it in an acid-free envelope or between sheets of archival paper in a dry, dark place.
- Cleaning & Maintenance
To remove dust, gently use a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster. Avoid using water, cleaning sprays, or damp cloths, as they can damage the print.
Please note: Some of our work has been sealed (UV resistant matt spray that is non-yellowing and acid free) to protect it from the environment (e.g. sunlight and dust), if it has, we will let you know.
